On 26th May, Union Education Minister Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank announced that two new papers will be added to GATE 2022. With the addition of these papers, the total number of papers in the GATE exam has increased from 27 to 29. However, the date of GATE 2022 has not been announced. It is also likely that the board will increase the number of exam centers so that students from remote areas can also attend the exam without any difficulty amidst the covid restrictions.
The newly introduced papers are:
- Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering
- Geomatics Engineering
The minister also said that IIT Kharagpur will be conducting GATE 2022. Candidates can expect the official notification released by IIT Kharagpur in July. The application forms will possibly be available on the official website by the first week of September 2022. The announcement was made via a tweet, from the minister’s official Twitter account.
Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering refers to the design and production of vessels and other naval/marine constructions. Only a few institutions/colleges offer Naval Architecture Engineering in India. Here are the major institutes that offer B.Tech/M.Tech courses on Naval Architecture.

- Andhra University, Visakhapatnam
However, some other colleges and institutes offer diploma and certificate courses in subjects such as Naval Architecture and Ship Building.

By adding these fast-growing disciplines in GATE, the authorities have widened the scope of GATE and the exam became more academically inclusive.
GATE exam is one of the most competitive and reputed exams in India. Previously it was exclusively for different engineering disciplines. But with the amendments made in 2021 in the eligibility criteria, students from Humanities, Arts and Commerce backgrounds can also appear for the GATE. This change further increased the possibilities of GATE.
GATE 2021 was conducted by IIT Bombay, and there were about 200 exam centers distributed under the eight organizing institutes. The exam was conducted by strictly adhering to covid-19 protocols and exam rules.
